Breaking the Large‑scale‑Application Bottleneck! Hefei Debo Wins Bid for Huadian Jiangling 66 MW Straw Gasification Coupling Project; Single‑unit 25 t/h Gasifier Sets New Industry Benchmark

Recently, Hefei Debo Energy successfully won the bid for the gasifier system section of the Huadian Jiangling 66 MW large-scale straw gasification-coupled power generation project. The project is equipped with two 25 t/h circulating fluidized bed (CFB) gasifiers, with a total coupled power generation capacity of 66 MW. It is a key large-scale biomass-coupled demonstration project under the framework of China's coal-fired power low-carbon retrofitting, and marks a significant breakthrough in the industry scale of China's agricultural and forestry waste CFB gasification-coupled equipment.



 

Looking back at the development trajectory of China's biomass gasification coupling industry, Hefei Debo Energy is the first company in China to achieve commercial deployment of biomass CFB gasification coupling technology for coal-fired power generation. As early as December 2010, the company, in partnership with Guodian Changyuan, built China's first complete set of circular fluidized bed gasifier coupling with coal-fired unit. A single 8 t/h gasifier achieved a coupled power generation capacity of 10.8 MW, using rice husk as feedstock. The project was officially put into commercial operation in July 2012, and was awarded the Second Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award at both the Jingmen City and Guodian Group levels, marking the beginning of the industrialization of biomass-coupled power generation in China's thermal power sector.



 

In 2017, Debo undertook the Huadian Xiangyang Phase I 10.8 MW power plant using circular fluidized bed gasifier coupling with coal-fired unit project, developing an 8 t/h CFB gasification system tailored to local straw feedstock. The project commenced operation in August 2018. As appraised by the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering (CSEE), the system's wide fuel adaptability gasification technology and power metering technology reached internationally leading levels. The gasifier was recognized as one of the first sets of major technical equipment in China's energy sector, and was awarded the First Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of Huadian Group, validating the engineering feasibility of large-scale crop straw gasification-coupled power generation.

 

Building on the know-how accumulated from Phase I, Debo continued to refine its processes. The Huadian Xiangyang Phase II 13.2 MW project was commissioned in 2024, achieving flexible dual-mode operation switching between biochar co-production and pure gasification power generation. The system's biomass processing capacity was increased to 11.5 t/h, enabling flexible mode switching in response to biochar and electricity market prices. The project achieved commercial operation in early 2026, effectively addressing the economic viability challenges of agroforestry biomass projects caused by fluctuations in feedstock and market prices.

 



The newly awarded Huadian Jiangling 66 MW project represents a significant leap forward in Debo's technological roadmap. The project features two 25 t/h CFB gasification units with a total coupled power generation capacity of 66 MW, aligning with the national policy encouraging 10% biomass co-firing. On the technical front, the project moves away from the traditional thermal oil heat exchange scheme and adopts an innovative waste heat boiler heat exchange process, increasing gasification thermal efficiency to over 90%. The system can also supply surplus steam to external users, further diversifying project revenue streams. Upon completion, the project is expected to generate 350 million kWh of electricity annually, reduce CO₂ emissions by 289,700 tons per year, and achieve a 15.3% reduction in carbon emission intensity per kWh compared to similar units. It will become one of the largest biomass gasification-coupled power generation projects in China.
