Another Large-scale Biomass Gasification Unit by Hefei Debo Has Completed Trial Operation – the Huadian Xiangyang Phase II Project Has Been Put into Operation, Providing A Replicable Path for the Low-carbon Transformation of Coal-fired Power Plants

The Phase II Biomass Gasification Project Coupling with Coal-fired Unit for Power Generation in collaboration with China Huadian Corporation successfully completed its 72+24-hour full-load trial operation on February 4, 2026 in Xiangyang, Hubei Province, and officially entered commercial operation. The core equipment of this project—the large-scale biomass circulating fluidized bed gasifier—was designed by Hefei Debo Bioenergy Technology Co., Ltd. This is the third such equipment successfully applied by Debo in a large-scale coal-fired power plant, marking a significant step towards the maturity of biomass gasification coupled power generation technology in my country and providing a reliable path for the low-carbon transformation of existing coal-fired power units.

Hefei Debo has been deeply involved in the field of biomass gasification for over a decade. Its First Set of such Equipment was put into operation in 2012 at a Power Plant owned by National Energy Group in Jingmen, Hubei Province, using rice husks as raw material, pioneering the coupling of large-scale coal-fired units with biomass gasification for power generation in China. The Second Set of such Equipment was successfully applied in 2018 at Phase I of the coal-burning power plant for China Huadian Corporation in Xiangyang, Hubei Probvince, using various crop straws as raw material, and was selected as one of the first (sets) of major technical equipment in the national energy sector. The Xiangyang Phase II project, which has been put into operation this time, is a "third-generation" technology product, which has achieved significant improvements in system flexibility, raw material adaptability and product diversification.



Technological Innovation Enables Cogeneration of Biogas and Biochar, Delivering a Win-Win Solution for Economic and Environmental Benefits

The project's biggest technological highlight lies in its ability to flexibly switch between two modes within a single system: efficient gasification only for power generation or cogeneration of power and biochar. In this case, the system can simultaneously produces biogas and high-value-added biochar, significantly enhancing the economic viability.

According to the project developers, the Xiangyang Phase II project can process 58,000 tons of agricultural and forestry waste annually, generating approximately 77 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 70,000 tons. Simultaneously, the cogeneration mode can produce approximately 5,000 tons of biochar annually, generating additional economic benefits of several million yuan. This effectively solves the problem of agricultural and forestry waste disposal and brings approximately 23 million yuan in fuel purchase income to local farmers, achieving a balance between environmental protection and economic benefits.

Significant Demonstration Effect, Charting a New Blueprint for Market Promotion

Industry experts believe that the successful commissioning of this project is a concrete practice of the National Action Plan for Low-Carbon Transformation of Coal-fired Power Plants, verifying the feasibility and advancement of the "coal-fired unit + biomass gasification" coupled technology. It has significant demonstrative value for promoting the green transformation of energy and serving the "dual-carbon" goals.

The head of Hefei Debo Company stated that, taking the successful commissioning of this project as a new starting point, they will focus on promoting three aspects: first, continuous technology optimization, developing a series of modular products to reduce costs; second, accelerating market expansion, promoting mature technologies to more coal-fired power plants with transformation needs; and third, leading the drafting of relevant national and industry standards to promote the standardized and regulated development of the entire industry.
